Henk Helmantel (1945, Westeremden Gr.) has been called a grandmaster of our time.
He clearly draws his inspiration from work by illustrious predecessors in and around the Golden Age.
His favourite subjects are still lifes and interiors of medieval (church) buildings.
As a fine painter, he knows how to depict his subjects with great realism, great perfection and a keen eye for detail.
His use of shadows and his special lighting are strongly reminiscent of Rembrandt's work, whom Helmantel cites as his great example.
